Shading Your Beloved Orchids
Orchid growers in Southern Australia are as keen and passionate a group of people as you are likely to meet, and it is always a pleasure to have them visit our showroom to buy shadecloth, whatever the season.
There remains however quite heightened debate amongst orchid growing enthusiasts about the best shade that one can use to protect their beloved offerings. Whilst it is generally accepted that either 50% or 70% shadecloth will provide the right protection whilst allowing enough light for photosynthesis, which percentage to specifically pick for which species, and which colour shadecloth to use (green, black, or white) incites vast differences in opinion.
I am not an orchid grower and would not dare weigh into the debate, other than to blog here that 50% white shadecloth (for spring and autumn), and 70% white shadecloth (for summer), are the most common purchases by enthusiasts.
Malcolm Campbell, one of Adelaide's most respected horticulturalists, has written an excellent article on the subject which I would encourage all of you who either grow or are considering growing any of the orchid species to read, and which you can download by visiting HERE.
We stock all the percentages and colours of shadecloth available for whatever your needs, and also manufacture a range of heavy duty domestic and commercial size shade houses for your consideration. Visit HERE for our web page or contact us at any time with your enquiry.
Cheers, Tim
